BOTH the Melbourne Renegades and Brisbane Heat say their cellar-dweller positions in the Big Bash League will not persuade them to be reckless in their match tonight at Etihad Stadium.
The Renegades' poor run rate is shaping as the biggest obstacle to their qualifying for the semi-finals. The Heat has only won once in five matches, but remains a slim chance to progress if it wins its last two matches and all other results go its way.
The home team's necessity to win convincingly in its past two matches, to more than offset its league-worst run-rate of -0.69, seemingly strengthens the case to retain enigmatic paceman Shaun Tait, although coach Simon Helmot rejected that argument. "It's more that we win this game. To win well would be a bonus," Helmot said.

The competition was replaced by the Big Bash League as Australia's domestic Twenty20 competition after the 2010–11 tournament. The Victorian Bushrangers were the most successful team during the tournament's running, winning the title four times.
The 2011–12 Big Bash League season is the inaugural season of the Big Bash League, the premier Twenty20 cricket competition in Australia. The tournament replaces the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash, which was run every season from 2005–06 to 2010–11.
